Submission for the 2018 Missing Middle competition hosted by Urbanarium, completed as a team of 3 with Cameron Crossley and Sultan Hussain. Submission was sponsored by Billard Architecture.
Hastings Heights opens a discussion to the high market vulnerability in the British Columbia Lower Mainland, and offers a solution that considers multiple perspectives from the points of:
1. Homeowners (independent, organizations, and government)
2. Construction professionals (architects, contractors, home designers)
3. Municipal planners
4. Financial professionals (banking institutions, government aid)
From these considerations, Hastings Heights demonstrates several designs on the smallest lot available in Burnaby. These solutions can be scaled up dependent on the site, the city, and needs of the community. The design proposes a home built to the existing setbacks, in addition to adding bylaw for laneway home additions. This maximizes the density while preserving the neighbourhood character of 2-3 storey homes.
The submission included architectural designs, a neighbourhood plan addressing transit and parking, zoning strategies and outcomes, zoning bylaw recommendations, municipal submission recommendations, and financial proforma.
